Edward
Barber was 21 years old and a Private in the 1st Bn.,
Grenadier Guards, during the First World War when the
following deed took place for which he was awarded the
VC.
His
citation reads:
On
12 March 1915 at Neuve Chapelle, France, Private Barber
ran in front of the grenade company to which he belonged,
and threw bombs on the enemy with such effect that
a very great number of them surrendered at once. When
the grenade party reached Private Barber they found
him alone and unsupported, with the enemy surrendering
all about him. He was killed later the same day by
a snipers bullet.
Barber
was born in Tring, Hertfordshire, in 1894 the son of
William and Sarah Ann Barber. His remains were lost
in later fighting on 12 March 1915 at Neuve Chapelle,
France and were never recovered.
