The
Hon. Henry Manvers Percy, VC, KCB

The
Hon. Henry Hugh Manvers Percy (VC, KCB) was 37 years
old, and a Colonel in the 3rd Bn., Grenadier Guards,
during the Crimean War when the following act of bravery
took place for which he was awarded the VC.
His citation reads:
On
5 November 1854 at the Battle of Inkerman, Crimea,
Colonel Percy was with a number of men from various
regiments who had charged too far, were nearly surrounded
by the enemy and without ammunition.

Although
wounded, the colonel extricated some 50 of the men
passing under heavy fire from the enemy and bringing
them to a place of safety, where they obtained fresh
ammunition and were able to continue fighting.
He later achieved the rank of Lieutenant General.
The Hon. Henry Hugh Manvers Percy (VC, KCB) was born
in Cobham, Surrey on 22 August 1817 and died on 3 December
1877 in London. He is buried in St Nicholas Chapel,
Westminster Abbey (Northumberland vault).
His
Victoria Cross is held at Alnwick Castle, Northumberland,
